SEL Fact of the Week, 11/14

A common practice in schools with unintended consequences is the way adults address each other in a building. Commonly we hear teachers and administrators address each other by their last names: Ms. Inman, Mr. Connelly, Ms. Hellerstein, yest custodians, bus drivers, and lunch workers are referred to as Sue, Brian, and Julia. This sends the implicit message to students within earshot that there is a social hierarchy, that some adults are more deserving of respect than others. No one intends this as disrespectful, and yest most would agree that a better practice would be to address all adults in a similar manner.
